Differential Encoding/Decoding vs Differential detection for QPSK

What is the difference between Differential encoded/decoded transmission QPSK and differential detected QPSK ?

I have simulated the 2 cases and found that differential encoded/decoded QPSK system has performance loss of 2dB at low SNR (around 0 dB) and low performance loss at high SNR region compared to normal QPSK curves.

When I simulate differential detected QPSK I experience about 3 dB loss compared to normal QPSK.

Can someone explain the reason for this behavior ?
