Mac OS X java update, matlab problems?

I just installed the recommended Java update (via Apple Software update)
And now I cannot use matlabpool - I get the following java error.

java.lang.NullPointerException
at java.util.logging.Logger.demandLogger(Logger.java:286)
at java.util.logging.Logger.getLogger(Logger.java:321)
""
And I'm seeing all sorts of errors when I try to even open the Cluster Profile Manager to validate the prrofile
I thought maybe I had some file corruption in my 2012B installation, so I tried re-installing - same error.
Also fired up the old 2012A version I still have - same error.
And I've also deleted my ~/.matlab/R2012x folders, to see if that was the problem.
No dice
Anyone else seeing similar issues?
I'm using a Mac Pro w 10.6.8 and Matlab 2012B
