MATH FORUM HANDOUTS FROM T^3 PHILADELPHIA
http://mathforum.org/workshops/t3/philly/exhibit.html
Did you miss us in the booth area or during our sessions at the recent T^3 International Conference in Philadelphia? Want copies of our handouts?
Feel free to access the printed matter distributed during the conference, including Problems of the Week (PoWs) that take advantage of the TI-Nspire graphing calculator.
For more information on our sessions or the conference in general, see

PoW taking place: math problem-solving moment of the week
"Check out this excerpt from Beatriz S. at Crooked Oak High School. I really liked how visual it was, even though there was a variable represented as well as constant values.... Here's one more visual for you, from Marissa N. at Mesa Union Junior High. She used a table to organize her steps, and it really helped me understand her process when she used such descriptive labels for each column. Plus, it turned out that writing on a whiteboard and photographing it was pretty legible!"
- Max, commenting on the Algebra PoW's Latest Solution

SUPPORTING SENSE-MAKING AND PERSEVERANCE
http://mathforum.org/articles/communicator2013.html
The Forum's Director of Professional Development has written a journal article about how the Math Forum's noticing and wondering not only values each learner, it "also works to engage all learners in finding their mathematical voice."
"Supporting Sense-Making and Perseverance," which appears in the current issue of the CMC ComMuniCator, provides an overview of what mathforum.org freely offers in the way of documents, videos, and blogs that support Common Core State Standards (CCSS) Mathematical Practice 1.
Later in that same issue appears "Ostrich Llama Count -- Examining Solution Methods." This article consists of an activity, alignments, directions, extensions, and activity sheets that detail five ways to solve the PoW "Ostrich Llama Count."
http://mathforum.org/articles/communicator2013_3.html
For more free sample PoWs -- along with teacher packets, scoring rubrics, and scenarios -- check out
http://mathforum.org/pow/teacher/samples.html
Between those two articles by Suzanne appears one by Math Forum Teacher Associate Marie Hogan. Having experimented with student groupings in her classrooms for decades, Marie recalls how one particular duo of eighth grade Pre-Algebra students, paired by ability level, overcame a contentious start to work together and "reach new heights of problem-solving proficiency."

These articles for the journal of the California Mathematics Council join several others written by Forum staff about implementing problem solving and writing:

Now taking place: math education conversation of the day
"We've released MathType 6.9 for Windows, fully compatible with Office 2013 and Office 365 installed on Windows 7 and 8 computers. In addition, MathType 6.9 includes increased compatibility with 700+ applications and websites, full MathJax support, and more." - Bob, posted to the Math Tools discussion

MATH TEACHERS' CIRCLE WORKSHOPS
http://www.mathteacherscircle.org/workshops.html
Apply now for the summer workshop "How to Run a Math Teachers' Circle," offered by the American Institute of Mathematics (AIM).
Math teachers' circles put middle school math teachers in regular contact with mathematicians to work collaboratively on mathematical problem solving in the context of rich problems.
The deadline for these professional development opportunities is Monday, 1 April, 2013.
AIM has begun archiving online its newsletter, which regularly features contributions from Joshua Zucker (aka "Doctor Schwa" of the Math Forum's Ask Dr. Math service), James Tanton, and others. MTCircular articles have included
- The "Good Problem" Problem: Where Do Good Problems Come From? - Learning to Lead: Participant Fawn Nguyen Offers Her Perspective on AIM's "How to Run a MTC" Workshop - Be Less Helpful: Embracing Perplexity to Create a Productive Classroom
