This problem can arise if you strike a bug in your program when you're writing to a file and Matlab does not reach fclose. Then you correct the bug and re-run, omitting to fclose before fopen, leaving the old file in no-man's land.

To solve it, download Unlocker (Google it) and run that on the errant file.
