Mathematics Education Professionals:

As states, school districts, and schools seek to
implement the Common Core State Standards in
Mathematics, appropriate professional development
opportunities are continually being sought for
mathematics teachers, mathematics instructional
coaches, and district curricular personnel.
Since 1998, the Mathematics Education Leadership
Training Program
at Appalachian State University
(<> in
Boone, NC has provided cutting edge professional
development opportunities for these audiences.
Beginning last year, MELT has focused on the
Common Core State Standards in Mathematics and
provide professional development for K-12
mathematics teachers through week-long,
residential, Summer Institutes focusing on the
mathematical and pedagogical content knowledge
needed by mathematics teachers to assist their
students to succeed. Each Institute provides
participants with the opportunity of earning
either continuing education units (CEUs) or
graduate credits. Included in this focus will be:

The content and delivery of each Institute will
mirror the style and content proposed in the
Common Core. This will help ensure that MELT
teacher participants gain both the content
knowledge and the confidence to replicate and
extend the content covered in these courses in
their own classrooms.
Integrated pedagogical and epistemological
considerations and experiences (e.g., instruction
and learning through: inquiry based methods,
mathematical modeling, using technology,
assessment strategies, reasoning and problem
solving, Standards on Mathematical Practices, and
investigating teacher and student beliefs) will
be paramount and will accompany the mathematical
Considerations on the nature and practice of
leadership will be infused into every course.
Participants will consider means and techniques
of bringing what they have learned back to their
classrooms, schools, districts and the state.
All MELT Institutes are co-instructed by a
university faculty and a K-12 Master Teacher.

The MELT Institutes for Summer 2013 include:

Week 1: June 17-21, 2013
Geometry in the Common Core
Navigating Course 1 in the Mathematics Common Core
Week 2: June 24-28, 2013
Algebra and Functions in the Common Core
Navigating Course 2 in the Mathematics Common Core
Week 3: July 8-12, 2013
Navigating Course 3 in the Mathematics Common Core
Mathematical Modeling through Data and Statistics (6-12)
Week 4: July 15-19, 2013

Descriptions of these courses are available

Fuller descriptions of the MELT program, the
Summer Institutes, and the daily schedule for the
Summer Institutes are available online. A brief
Promotional Brochure and the Registration Form
are also provided to assist teachers, schools,
