Setting axis scaling in MATLAB

Here's what I'd like to do:
I have a 2D plot for an ANOVA of 52 trials with 5 repetitions per trial. The tick mark labels for the xaxis ("1","2","3","4",...,"52") are crammed together because of the 52 different xaxis trials in the ANOVA. So the numbers which label the xaxis are unreadable (e.g. "4849505152").
Is there a way that I can change the labeling on the tick marks such that I only have a number written every 10 or so. (e.g. "1 10 20 30 40 50")? Also, is there a way to change those tick markers to text strings such as ("apples oranges lemons bananas")?
Thanks. Tony Reina
