The Department

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is one of four
departments within University College, which offers to students a
high quality foundational liberal education, the Colloquy on
Integrated Learning. The program prepares them for their future
majors and eventual employment. The experience instills in the
students a desire for lifelong learning, fosters intellectual
curiosity, and engenders critical thinking. The Colloquy program
initiates the baccalaureate careers of all ZU students and has as its
goal to build students' understanding of their relation to the world
and to equip them to be successful at the University, in their
professions and in their personal lives through an integrated,
skill-rich, interdisciplinary core curriculum.

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is currently responsible
for providing three general education mathematics courses, courses
for math education students, business math courses, math courses for
science, and a math minor. The mathematics program serves EFL/ESL
students. Faculty in the department helps to develop mathematical
competency and quantitative literacy of students in the general
education program, as well as in the majors of the students' choice.
The department offers a Minor in Math, a nascent program that would
need leadership and careful steering. Additionally, the department
has begun providing high quality courses in the major; the Chair will
need to advance this embryonic aspect of the department's efforts to
fulfill its charge.

Departmental instruction ensures that students meet the University's
Learning Outcome on critical thinking and quantitative reasoning at
entry, intermediate and graduation levels. Faculty teach twelve
credit-hours per week; they are expected to have a modest pace of
scholarship demonstrating engagement with their discipline/profession
and are expected to be active members of the University and College
community. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is
responsible for delivering general education mathematics courses and
administering the University College's Math Help Center. More
information about the department and the College can be obtained at:
