Camp 2013!

Taking place from Thursday, 25 July through Sunday, 28 July in
Philadelphia (the Forum's back yard!), this self-styled
"guerrilla professional development for math teachers" does not
focus on how to use blogs or Twitter or social media in
the classroom. Quoting from the registration page:

"It isn't even how to teach teachers to use social media to
connect with each other. And it isn't centered around
technology. It's really designed for math teachers in the
classroom who are looking to become better, and who use the
internets to talk about it and share resources and get better."

SUMMER OF INNOVATION MINI-AWARDS FROM NASA

The 2013 Summer of Innovation (SoI) project challenges middle
school students across the United States to share in the
excitement of scientific discovery and space exploration
through science, technology, engineering and mathematics
(STEM) opportunities related to the National Aeronautics and
Space Administration (NASA). Open to schools, science camps,
Boy Scout troops, Girl Scout troops, local YMCAs, libraries,
museums, science centers, and other organizations that serve
middle school students or teachers -- especially those
involved with underrepresented and underserved
populations -- SoI supports follow-on and extended learning
efforts to keep teens involved in STEM activities during the
academic year.

Before applying for NASA STEM educational content and grants up
to $2,500, review the SoI Educational Resources database for
activities that fit well into your organization's mission and
current activities:

EARLY LOOK AT SMARTER BALANCED PRACTICE TESTS

Earlier this week, the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium
released sets of its assessment questions aligned to the Common
Core State Standards (CCSS) for grades 3-8 and 11 in mathematics.

Available nearly two years before implementation, these tests
already feature a variety of accessibility tools and
accommodations -- such as text to speech, Braille, and a
customized pop-up Spanish glossary -- to provide accurate
measures of achievement and growth for students with
disabilities and English language learners.

Demo the features of the state-led consortium's online testing,
and see how Smarter Balanced will assess students' mastery of
the CCSS, by signing in as the default "guest":
