If you initialise a to a real number, this problem goes away:

Manipulate[
Plot[Sin[a x], {x, 0, 4 Pi}], {{a, 1.0}, 0, 2 \[Pi],
VerticalGauge[##, ImageSize -> 50] &}, ControlPlacement -> Left]
