A teacher asked me for advice on how I was preparing to teach NYS Common Core Algebra 1 this fall. I thought this topic would be a good discussion point for the group. Here's my two cents:
You need to read A Story of Functions, PARCC standards breakout, any PARCC documents that give details, such as assessment breakouts (even though they are not NYS assessments), and details of the difference between Alg 1 and Alg 2. PARCC progression documents won't tell you what is in Alg 1 but are the best descriptions I have seen what the standards encompass for HS topics. No crosswalk is available from the 2005 standards to the Core. No glossary is available although the modules should include vocabulary. (Will they have definitions? Probably but the actual regents tests are not written by the module writing company so expect conflicts in this area as well as other areas.)
You should also be familiar with PARCC standards for gr 6 - 8 so you will know previous skills.
Having said all that-I am waiting for the release of the Algebra 1 modules. NYSED has *promised* they will be available by 31 July. An overview of Module 1 is available on engageny.org. It lists lessons and gives sample assessments but remember the modules and the new regents are NOT written by the same company so the sample assessments are not meant to be 'regents-like'. Full modules are expected to include scripted lessons, homework assignments, everything to teach the course.
How to review for both the common core regents by the beginning of June and the regular Algebra 1 regents mid-June: I'm still thinking about this conundrum.
