Now taking place: math education conversation of the day

"What is it that we are hoping to achieve? I dare say that
none of us would thumb our collective nose at high standards
and rigorous curriculum. As a state, we need appropriate time
to prepare our students, we need developmentally appropriate
curriculum, and we have to be honest that while many students
are passing the current algebra Regents exam, we have a fair
number of students who are not algebraically competent to
continue in mathematics -- even though the state has blessed
them with a passing Regents exam score."

INTERESTING ZIP CODES

http://mediamaps.esri.com/interesting-zips/

Traveling somewhere this summer? In celebration of the US
Postal Service's 50th anniversary of the Zone Improvement Plan
(ZIP) earlier this month, ESRI created a tour of nine
interesting ZIP codes from around the country.

Also check out the "story maps" by ESRI, developers of
geographic information system (GIS) ArcGIS. Each of the
annotated multimedia maps in this growing collection tells the
spatial and quantitative stories behind a wide array of
destinations and topics, such as

- most visited National Parks
- marriage equality
- hiking the Appalachian Trail (AT)
- the US's largest malls
- Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM)
college degrees, charter schools, and STEM schools
- the Moore (OK) tornado
- bats
- Thanksgiving dinner
- obesity and diabetes
- Irish surnames

http://storymaps.esri.com/home/

Now wrapping up its International User Conference, ESRI freely
offers a library of ArcLessons with dozens of lesson plans
specific to mathematics, including

- Travel Time to Major Cities
- GPS & Heron's Algorithm
- Investigating Extreme Temperatures in the USA
- Measuring the Circumference of the Earth with GPS
- Geocaching
- Analyzing Water Use with GIS
- On the Road Again (Transportation Analysis of the USA)

Now taking place: math education conversation of the day

"I am at the Network Team Institute now receiving training on
the module. Check out how they emphasize the connection between
polynomials and integers using base 10 ... end of module
assessment task -- question 10, page 308. This proves the shift
in instructional delivery that we all will have to accept and
find solace in that it will get easier as the students come to
us with different foundations rooted in this
reasoning/theoretical approach."

TRAVEL AND TOURISM SPENDING BY THE NUMBERS

http://www.census.gov/newsroom/cspan/tourism/

Last Friday, a branch chief from the Bureau of Economic
Analysis and a senior vice president from the U.S. Travel
Association appeared on C-SPAN's "America by the Numbers"
television program to discuss travel and tourism spending in
the nation. That show's freely downloadable graphs and charts
of federal statistics address

- How much is spent on travel and tourism?
- Which part of travel and tourism grew recently?
- Where are the tourism jobs?
- Where are international visitors to the U.S coming from?
- Does travel and tourism add to or subtract from our
trade deficit?

For the full 42 minute-long video of the segment -- including
calls and Tweets from the audience that watched it live last
Friday -- visit

http://www.c-spanvideo.org/program/Heut

"America by the Numbers" explicitly aims to build statistical
literacy. Other recent episodes of this C-SPAN program "about
the numbers that measure our nation" have included

- School Crime and Safety
- Who's Minding the Kids? Child Care Arrangements
and Payments
- Youth Mental Health and Drug Abuse
- How U.S. Students Compare Internationally
