Strategic Hire Assistant or Associate Professor of Mathematics Education

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics
(http://www.math.sdsu.edu/) at San Diego State University invites
applications for a full-time tenure track position in Mathematics
Education at the Assistant or Associate Professor level beginning in
August 2014.

We are looking for an applicant with a research program that is
consistent with the goals of a university-wide Strategic Plan
(https://newscenter.sdsu.edu/strategicplan/images/finalstrategic
plan.pdf ), which includes calls for reaching out to
under-represented students through instructional innovations and
other efforts that will result in greater student success and
retention and eliminate achievement gaps. In the spirit of these
goals, we seek to hire a mathematics education researcher with a
research program focused on broadening participation in STEM fields
(for example, issues of identity and power, social justice, equity
and diversity, language diversity and classroom practices, or
culturally responsive pedagogy). We are also looking for a colleague
to join our large group of mathematics educators, from the College of
Sciences and the College of Education, who conduct collaborative
research through the Center for Research in Mathematics and Science
Education (CRMSE, http://www.sci.sdsu.edu/CRMSE/): Nadine Bezuk,
Janet Bowers, Lisa Lamb, Joanne Lobato, Ricardo Nemirovsky, Susan
Nickerson, Randy Philipp, Chris Rasmussen, and Rafaela Santa Cruz.

Applicants should have a doctorate in mathematics education or a
related field. Preference will be given to candidates with a strong
background in mathematics. Successful candidates will demonstrate a
strong research program and teaching skills. Strong preference will
be given to candidates with potential and commitment to seek
extramural funding. Experience working with K-16 students is
desirable, as is experience working with preservice or inservice
teachers. Responsibilities of the position include graduate and
undergraduate teaching, as well as research supervision and
mentoring. Mathematics Education programs within the department
include a BA degree in mathematics in preparation for the Single
Subject Teaching Credential and two Master of Arts for Teaching
Service (MATS) programs. Faculty also have opportunities to
participate in the Joint Doctoral Program in Mathematics and Science
Education, offered with the University of California at San Diego
(UCSD).

Applications should include: (a) cover letter, (b) curriculum vita,
(c) description of research program, (d) statement of teaching
philosophy, (e) three letters of recommendation, and (f) two samples
of scholarly writing. Please send your application to Dr. Joanne
Lobato, Mathematics Education Search Committee Chair, Dept. of
Mathematics and Statistics, San Diego State University, San Diego, CA
92182-7720. Review of applications will begin on November 1, 2013 and
continue until the position is filled. If you have questions about
the position, contact Joanne Lobato (jlobato@mail.sdsu.edu;
