Responding to Jonathan Crabtree dt. Oct 8, 2013 8:31 AM (http://mathforum.org/kb/thread.jspa?threadID=2601226):

I did long ago have several months of Sanskrit during which I learned, alas, nothing whatsoever - so I shan't be able to provide an adequate translation.

To guess, I would suspect that the statement ascribed to Brahmagupta at MacTutor

"The product or quotient of two debts is one fortune"

HAS to be in error.

It's entirely unlikely to represent accurately what Brahmagupta actually stated - given that so much that he did say was entirely correct mathematically.
