CENSUS DATA DURING THE GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN

In response to the federal government shutdown, Oxford
University Press announced last Friday that it has opened up
access to Social Explorer, its subscription website of current
and historical census data and demographic information:

For free access until next Friday, 18 October, to Social
Explorer's data -- which ranges from 2010 all the way back to
1790, and further includes American Community Survey data
featured in these pages previously -- simply email
onlinereference@oup.com to request a username and password.

Photo Contest!

Open to secondary-school students (grades/years 7-12) around
the world, this contest awards cash prizes for the best photos
that address "how statistics advances the wellbeing of people
in your country or our global society."

Enter before the deadline of Friday, 1 November.

The founding organizations of the International Year of
Statistics are the American Statistical Association (ASA),
Institute of Mathematical Statistics (IMS), International

Do you or your students have an idea for bettering your math
community? The Center of Mathematics (CoM) wants to know -- and
turn one lucky idea into a reality with a $1,000 award.

CoM announced on Tuesday that it seeks proposals from U.S. high
schoolers, undergraduates, and their educators about funding
your trip to a math competition, or buying math-related
supplies for your group, or backing your mathematical research.
Submit your short written proposal with a photo or video before
the deadline of Monday, 4 November.

Committed to making mathematics accessible to all, CoM does its
part to strengthen the math community through open resources
and research. CoM's video-textbooks feature linked
cross-references, pop-up margin comments, interactive graphs,
and relevant teaching videos embedded directly within its
