CURRICULUM INSPIRATIONS

http://www.maa.org/math-competitions/teachers/curriculum-inspirations

A new collection of resources aligned to Common Core State
Standards (CCSS) Problem Solving Strategies came out
last weekend.

Curriculum Inspirations, based on the Mathematical Association
of America (MAA) American Mathematics Competitions (AMC),
demonstrates practical ways for students to explore mathematics
and mathematical thinking. The collection includes videos and
essays on problem solving strategies such as

- Engage in Successful Flailing
- Engage in Wishful Thinking
- Draw a Picture
- Solve a Smaller Version of the Same Problem
- Perseverance is Key
- Second-Guess the Author
- Avoid Hard Work
- Go to Extremes

Developed by James Tanton, who conducts Math for America's
professional development program, Curriculum Inspirations
received support from the Mary P. Dolciani Halloran Foundation
and the TBL and Akamai Foundations.

PoW taking place: math problem-solving moment of the week

"To make sure that I completely understood the problem, I read
it through a few times. I then pondered the question. It
didn't make sense so I thought some more. Then I got an
idea.... To make sure I had my answer correct, I solved it
another way, using an algebraic formula.... REFLECTIONS:
1. I feel much better about my answer because I solved it
another way and also came up with a formula to go with it.
2. I really think doing this problem helped my understanding
of algebra a lot. It made me feel more comfortable about
doing algebra, too."

- Evan, highlighted in the FunPoW's Latest Solution
