ERIC'S BIG RELEASE

The Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC) last week
announced its efforts to bring over a quarter million education
articles and reports back online.

Formerly omitted due to privacy, more than 72,000 PDFs have
already rejoined the nationwide information network's database
for full text download, including peer-reviewed materials and
all releasable documents published from 2005 onward.

Regular sources on math education run the gamut:

- ACT, Inc.
- Australian Senior Mathematics Journal
- Mathematics Education Research Journal
- Mathematics Educator
- National Council on Teacher Quality
- Society for Research on Educational Effectiveness
- What Works Clearinghouse
- ... and many more

Search by publication date and type, education level, authors,
descriptors such as "teaching methods" and "abstract
reasoning"; or drill down and around ERIC's thesaurus, which
lists dozens of subcategories and related terms
for mathematics:

reviews Monday.

Sally Ride Science, founded by America's first woman in space,
launched STEM Central last month. The company, which also

TUNE INTO THE NATION'S REPORT CARD LIVE WEBINAR THURSDAY

How well are U.S. students performing in mathematics? Join the
National Assessment Governing Board (NAGB) on 7 November, at
10 AM (ET) for a live webinar release of The Nation's Report
Card: Mathematics and Reading 2013, Grades 4 and 8.

As with the webinar for the last Nation's Report Card,
highlighted in these pages two years ago, this Thursday's event
will feature a panel of experts taking an in-depth look at
national and state-level data from the National Assessment of
Educational Progress (NAEP) on what fourth- and eighth-grade
students know and can do in mathematics and reading.

Jack Buckley, Commissioner of the National Center for
Education Statistics (NCES), will present the data. He will be
joined by the Honorable Leticia Van De Putte, a Texas State
Senator; William D. Waidelich, Executive Director of the
Association for Middle Level Education; and Cornelia Orr,
Executive Director of NAGB, who will serve as moderator of
the panel.

This report card will also, for the first time, show
mathematics and reading results side by side. Videos will
provide guidance on exploring and interpreting results that
reveal how students are performing in these subject areas,
based on race and ethnicity, gender, income level, and
additional contextual factors.
