Using an ideal LPF filter on fft( ) in MATLAB

abs(fft(x)) results in a peak on the LHS of the spectrum, and its reflected one on the RHS.

If I implemented an ideal LPF by simply setting inner values (between the two peaks) to zero, do I set the real part of fft(x) to zero, or do I set the real and imaginary parts of fft(x) to zero?
