4D plot- 3Dplot with color at surface plane

Dear expert Matlab programmers,

I am struggling with maybe a simple challenge, but I really need your kind hints.
The data I am dealing with contains location of observatory station x, y and z; and for each station we have value of c, which is the number of observed fish at that location.

I am keen to draw a 4D figure, in which I could show a surface plane, instead of scatter 3D, and define the color of this plan based on the number of observed fish. It would help me to better visualize the interaction between location (x,y,z) and the number of fish, c.

I do know surf(x,y,z,c) may work, and so far I obtained a nice plane that well fitted on my data, but the color of plane is based on z and not c.
How properly I can define c?
I believe c should be same size as z, am I right?

If so, do I need to use extrapolation/extrapolation functions to estimate the c values for the same mesh grid as z?
