matlab 2013a bug in figure: whitebg Too many output arguments

I am on mac os x (mavericks) and have Matlab version 2013a.
The figure window's background is black and the text is white (usually, it is the way around).
When I type in whitebg, I get an error:

>> whitebg
Error using dot
Too many output arguments.
Error in whitebg (line 97)
lum = dot([.298936021 .58704307445 .114020904255],c(k,:));

I think this is a matlab bug.

Is there a work around to fix this?
Most importantly, how can I get my figure to have the normal colors (white background and black fonts)
