The most promising practices in math education will be the
subject of a free webinar on Wednesday, 22 January.

Hosted by Education Week, the moderated hour-long
conversation will feature

- Valerie Mills, President of the National Council of
Supervisors of Mathematics (NCSM)
- Cathy Fosnot, professor emeritus of childhood education,
City College of New York (CCNY) and the Graduate Center
of the City University of New York (CUNY)
- Francis (Skip) Fennell, past President of the National
Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) and the
Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE)

These three panelists will address topics such as

- formative assessment
- meeting the diverse needs of all students
- Common Core State Standards (CCSS)
- digital learning technologies

Mills, Fosnot, and Fennell will also field audience questions
during the session, as well as a selection of those submitted

Can the plane be tiled with kites and chevrons?

In how many ways can 1/2 be written as a sum of unit fractions?

Come investigate these questions -- and find out how they are
related -- at the Park City Mathematics Institute (PCMI).

Teachers who participate in the 2014 Summer Session of the
Institute for Advanced Study (IAS)/PCMI Secondary School
Teachers Program (SSTP) receive full support and a stipend
during this residential program, which takes place in Park
City, Utah, from June 29 - July 19, 2014. Six quarter-credits
of 400-level mathematics are available from the University
of Washington.

Beyond the mathematical foci on fractions, tilings, and
geometry, SSTP participants will also consider research about
productive discussions and reflect upon how to facilitate them.

MATH500.COM NOW DOES THE HOMEWORK

The teacher behind math500.com wrote us this week with an
update on how his revision tool, first featured here about a
year ago, has since "evolved in our school."

Joe Cunningham's website of self-guided problems reinforces
learning by providing automated feedback based on the strategy
selected from among the multiple choices presented at each
step, or upon the intermediate calculation entered.
Step-by-step worked examples provide additional support.

Cunningham has recently added e-mail functionality and class
management features to math500.com. The site now lets teachers
send students problems by e-mail, monitor when they have begun
work, and see how they have performed with the
auto-correcting program.
