The exact wording of the prize is "for his services to Theoretical Physics, and especially for his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect". There was some dispute as to whether his theory of relativity was "practical" enough to meet the dictates of Nobel's will. The thesis that he "really" got the prize for this theory of relativity can be defended.
