Now taking place: math education conversation of the day

"Your discussion of 'accents' resonates strongly with me. I
teach at a small, coastal, rural school where some students
have been fishing since they were in grade school. As high
school students, they are already financially independent and
earning way more than I can ever hope to earn as a teacher. In
math classes, they often say there is no relevance and no need
to learn what is offered. It is often a language barrier. But
it is also a perception that what they do is not math, and
that what we do in class is not the same as what they do in
their lives."
