The New Yorker carries a fascinating article "Debt by Degrees", by James Surowiecki, http://www.newyorker.com/talk/financial/2011/11/21/111121ta_talk_surowiecki. It appears that US citizens today "owe well over six hundred billion dollars in college debt".

Mr Surowiecki does not, however, indicate any practical way of reducing this huge debt burden or bringing it under control. He says: "Until America figures out its priorities, college kids are going to have to keep running just to stand still".
