Dear Colleagues,

Western Michigan University is seeking a mathematics educator to join
10 mathematics education and 20 mathematics tenure-stream faculty in
the Department of Mathematics at Western Michigan University. This
tenure-track position is at the assistant or associate professor
level. The Department of Mathematics houses all the mathematics and
mathematics education courses for elementary and secondary
mathematics preservice teachers and for mathematics education masters
and doctoral students.

Originally a normal school, WMU has a long history of valuing and
supporting teachers and teaching. The University's commitment to be
"a student-centered research institution" reflects the importance we
place on teaching and research. This emphasis is evident in the
design of our doctoral programs in mathematics education through
requirements such as practicums in both teaching and research.

Our commitment to improving school mathematics and its teaching
through research and capacity building is also apparent in the more
than $26 million of National Science Foundation grants that the
Department has received over the past 20 years. These awards include
The Core-Plus Mathematics Project (1992-2015), Implementing
Investigations in Mathematics (1999-2005), Assessment for Learning
Research Scholars: Capacity Building in Mathematics and Science
Education (2007-2014), Improving Curriculum Use for Better Teaching
(2009-2015), and Leveraging MOSTs: Developing a Theory of Productive
Use of Student Mathematical Thinking (2012-2016).

Kalamazoo is a mid-sized city with cultural activities as varied as
the Gilmore International Keyboard Festival, traveling and local
theatre, bike trails, and an award-winning craft beer scene. The
Kal-Haven multi-use trail connects Kalamazoo to the beaches of Lake
Michigan and Chicago is a short two-hour car ride away. The Kalamazoo
Promise, a privately funded program that provides free college
tuition to all graduates of Kalamazoo Public Schools, reflects the
philanthropic orientation of the community.

If you or anyone you know might be interested in this position,
please see the attached position announcement for more details or go
