Title: Composite Empirical Likelihood Authors: Adam Jaeger and Nicole Lazar Categories: math.ST stat.TH \\ The likelihood function plays a pivotal role in statistical inference; it is adaptable to a wide range of models and the resultant estimators are known to have good properties. However, these results hinge on correct specification of the data generating mechanism. Many modern problems involve extremely complicated distribution functions, which may be difficult  if not impossible  to express explicitly. This is a serious barrier to the likelihood approach, which requires not only the specification of a distribution, but the correct distribution. Nonparametric methods are one way to avoid the problem of having to specify a particular data generating mechanism, but can be computationally intensive, reducing their accessibility for large data problems. We propose a new approach that combines multiple nonparametric likelihoodtype components to build a datadriven approximation of the true function. The new construct builds on empirical and composite likelihood, taking advantage of the strengths of each. Specifically, from empirical likelihood we borrow the ability to avoid a parametric specification, and from composite likelihood we utilize multiple likelihood components. We use various combinatorial, algebraic, and computational methods to improve lower bounds for M(n,d). Some lower bounds are based on a new computational approach called a coset method. We also use algebraic techniques, involving computing the Hamming distances of affine semilinear groups and projective semilinear groups, and unions of cosets of AGL(1,q) and PGL(2,q) with Frobenius maps to obtain infinitely many new, improved lower bounds for M(n,d). We give new randomized algorithms for computing cosets. For example, we show that M(13,4) is at least 60,635,520, where 41,712,480 was previously the best lower bound. Furthermore, this permutation array consists of a union of 638 cosets of a group of 95,040 permutations, so it can be recorded and verified quickly. In this article, we propose and study a general modeling framework that includes the following three features: (a) the average internal response threshold for each task (the internal factor); (b) social network communications that could lead to task switching (the environmental factor); and (c) dynamical changes of task demands (the external factor). Since workers in many social insect species exhibit \emph{age polyethism}, we also extend our model to incorporate \emph{age polyethism} in which worker task preferences change with age. We apply our general modeling framework to the cases of two task groups: the inside colony task versus the outside colony task. Our analytical study of the models provides important insights and predictions on the effects of colony size, social communication, and age related task preferences on task allocation and division of labor in the adaptive dynamical environment. Our study implies that the smaller size colony invests its resource for the colony growth and allocates more workers in the risky tasks such as foraging while the larger colony shifts more workers to perform the safer tasks inside the colony.
