Title: On the metaplectic group in even residual characteristic
Authors: Gordan Savin and Aaron Wood
Categories: math.RT
\\
For maximal compact subgroups of the metaplectic group, the minimal types
in
the Schr\"odinger model of the Weil representation are calculated
explicitly.
Although these types are known in the case of odd residual characteristic,
this
computation is done for arbitrary residual characteristic.

Title: The Capelli identity and Radon transform for Grassmannians
Authors: Siddhartha Sahi and Genkai Zhang
Categories: math.RT math.MG
\\
We study a family $C_{s,l}$ of Capelli-type invariant differential
operators
on the space of rectangular matrices over a real division algebra. The
$C_{s,l}$ descend to invariant differential operators on the corresponding
Grassmannian, which is a compact symmetric space, and we determine the
image of
the $C_{s,l}$ under the Harish-Chandra homomorphism. We also obtain
analogous
results for corresponding operators on the non-compact duals of the
Grassmannians, and for line bundles. As an application we obtain a Radon
inversion formula, which generalizes a recent result of B. Rubin for real
Grassmannians.

For any Lie group $G$, we construct a $G$-equivariant analogue of
symplectic
capacities and give examples when $G = \mathbb{T}^k\times\mathbb{R}^{d-k}$,

Title: Lagrangian antisurgery
Authors: Luis Haug
Categories: math.SG
\\
We describe an operation which, under certain conditions, modifies a
Lagrangian submanifold $L$ such as to produce a new immersed Lagrangian
submanifold $L'$, which as a smooth manifold is obtained by surgery along a
framed sphere in $L$. Intuitively, this can be described as collapsing an
isotropic disc with boundary on L to a point. The operation inverse to that
generalizes classical Lagrangian surgery. We also describe corresponding
Lagrangian cobordisms.

Title: Spectral and scattering theory for differential and Hankel operators

We consider a class of Hankel operators $H$ realized in the space $L^2
({\Bbb
R}_{+}) $ as integral operators with kernels $h(t+s)$ where $h(t)=P (\ln t)
t
^{-1}$ and $P(X)= X^n+p_{n-1} X^{n-1}+\cdots$ is an arbitrary real
polynomial
of degree $n$. This class contains the classical Carleman operator when $n
=0$.
We show that a Hankel operator $H$ in this class can be reduced by an {\it
explicit} unitary transformation (essentially by the Mellin transform) to a
differential operator $A = v Q(D) v$ in the space $L^2 ({\Bbb R}) $. Here
$Q(X)= X^n+ q_{n-1} X^{n-1}+\cdots$ is a polynomial determined by $P(X)$ and
$v(\xi)=\pi^{1/2} (\cosh(\pi\xi))^{-1/2} $ is the universal function. Then
the
operator $A = v Q(D) v$ reduces by the generalized Liouville transform to
the
standard differential operator $B = D^n+ b_{n-1} (x)D^{n-1}+\cdots+ b_{0}
(x)$
with the coefficients $b_{m}(x)$, $m=0,\ldots, n-1$, decaying sufficiently
rapidly as $|x|\to \infty$. This allows us to use the results of spectral
theory of differential operators for the study of spectral properties of
generalized Carleman operators. In particular, we show that the absolutely
continuous spectrum of $H$ is simple and coincides with $\Bbb R$ if $n$ is
odd,
and it has multiplicity $2$ and coincides with $[0,\infty)$ if $n\geq 2$ is
even. The singular continuous spectrum of $H$ is empty, and its eigenvalues
may
accumulate to the point $0$ only. As a by-product of our considerations, we
develop spectral theory of a new class of {\it degenerate} differential
operators $A = v Q(D) v$ where $Q(X)$ is an arbitrary real polynomial and
$v(\xi)$ is a sufficiently arbitrary real function decaying at infinity.

Title: Inverse tensor eigenvalue problem
Authors: Ke Ye and Shenglong Hu
Categories: math.SP
\\
A tensor $\mathcal T\in \mathbb T(\mathbb C^n,m+1)$, the space of tensors
of
order $m+1$ and dimension $n$ with complex entries, has $nm^{n-1}$
eigenvalues
(counted with algebraic multiplicities). The inverse eigenvalue problem for
tensors is a generalization of that for matrices. Namely, given a multiset
$S\in \mathbb C^{nm^{n-1}}/\mathfrak{S}(nm^{n-1})$ of total multiplicity
$nm^{n-1}$, is there a tensor in $\mathbb T(\mathbb C^n,m+1)$ such that the
multiset of eigenvalues of $\mathcal{T}$ is exact $S$? The solvability of
the
inverse eigenvalue problem for tensors is studied in this paper. With tools
from algebraic geometry, it is proved that the necessary and sufficient
condition for this inverse problem to be generically solvable is $m=1,\
\text{or }n=2,\ \text{or }(n,m)=(3,2),\ (4,2),\ (3,3)$.

Title: Composite Empirical Likelihood
Authors: Adam Jaeger and Nicole Lazar
Categories: math.ST stat.TH
\\
The likelihood function plays a pivotal role in statistical inference; it
is
adaptable to a wide range of models and the resultant estimators are known
to
have good properties. However, these results hinge on correct specification
of
the data generating mechanism. Many modern problems involve extremely
complicated distribution functions, which may be difficult -- if not
impossible
-- to express explicitly. This is a serious barrier to the likelihood
approach,
which requires not only the specification of a distribution, but the correct
distribution. Non-parametric methods are one way to avoid the problem of
having
to specify a particular data generating mechanism, but can be
computationally
intensive, reducing their accessibility for large data problems. We propose
a
new approach that combines multiple non-parametric likelihood-type
components
to build a data-driven approximation of the true function. The new construct
builds on empirical and composite likelihood, taking advantage of the
strengths
of each. Specifically, from empirical likelihood we borrow the ability to
avoid
a parametric specification, and from composite likelihood we utilize
multiple
likelihood components. We will examine the theoretical properties of this
composite empirical likelihood, both for purposes of application and to
compare
properties to other established likelihood methods.

We consider a stationary regularly varying time series which can be
expressed
as a function of a geometrically ergodic Markov chain. We obtain practical
conditions for the weak convergence of weighted versions of the multivariate
tail empirical process. These conditions include the so-called geometric
drift
or Foster-Lyapunov condition and can be easily checked for most usual time
series models with a Markovian structure. We illustrate these conditions on
several models and statistical applications.

Title: Constructing Permutation Arrays from Groups
Authors: Sergey Bereg, Avi Levy, I. Hal Sudborough
Categories: cs.DM math.CO
\\
Let M(n,d) be the maximum size of a permutation array on n symbols with
pairwise Hamming distance at least d. We use various combinatorial,
algebraic,
and computational methods to improve lower bounds for M(n,d). Some lower
bounds
are based on a new computational approach called a coset method. We also use
algebraic techniques, involving computing the Hamming distances of affine
semilinear groups and projective semilinear groups, and unions of cosets of
AGL(1,q) and PGL(2,q) with Frobenius maps to obtain infinitely many new,
improved lower bounds for M(n,d). We give new randomized algorithms for
computing cosets. For example, we show that M(13,4) is at least 60,635,520,
where 41,712,480 was previously the best lower bound. Furthermore, this
permutation array consists of a union of 638 cosets of a group of 95,040
permutations, so it can be recorded and verified quickly. An up-to-date
table
of lower bounds for M(n,d) is also given.

Title: N>=2 symmetric superpolynomials

\\
The theory of symmetric functions has been extended to the case where each
variable is paired with an anticommuting one. The resulting expressions,
dubbed
superpolynomials, provide the natural N=1 supersymmetric version of the
classical bases of symmetric functions. Here we consider the case where two
independent anticommuting variables are attached to each ordinary variable.
The
N=2 super-version of the monomial, elementary, homogeneous symmetric
functions,
as well as the power sums, are then constructed systematically (using an
exterior-differential formalism for the multiplicative bases), these
functions
being now indexed by a novel type of superpartitions. Moreover, the scalar
product of power sums turns out to have a natural N=2 generalization which
preserves the duality between the monomial and homogeneous bases. All these
results are then generalized to an arbitrary value of N. Finally, for N=2,
the
scalar product and the homogenous functions are shown to have a
one-parameter
deformation, a result that prepares the ground for the yet-to-be-defined N=2
Jack superpolynomials.

We study the generating functional, the adiabatic curvature and the
adiabatic
phase for the integer quantum Hall effect (QHE) on a compact Riemann
surface.
For the generating functional we derive its asymptotic expansion for the
large
flux of the magnetic field, i.e., for the large degree k of the positive
Hermitian line bundle $L^k$. The expansion consists of the anomalous and
exact
terms. The anomalous terms are the leading terms of the expansion. This
part is
responsible for the quantization of the adiabatic transport coefficients in
QHE. We then identify the anomalous part of the expansion with the Quillen
metric on the determinant line bundle, and the subleading exact part with
the
asymptotics of the regularized spectral determinant of the Laplacian for the
line bundle $L^k$, at large k. Finally, we show how the generating
functional
of the integer QHE is related to the gauge and gravitational (2+1)d
Chern-Simons functionals. We observe the relation between the
Bismut-Gillet-Soul\'e curvature formula for the Quillen metric and the
adiabatic curvature for the electromagnetic and geometric adiabatic
transport
of the integer Quantum Hall state. We then obtain the geometric part of the
adiabatic phase in QHE, given by the Chern-Simons functional.

Title: Dynamical models of task organization in social insect colonies
Authors: Yun Kang and Guy Theraulaz
Categories: q-bio.PE math.DS
\\
The organizations of insect societies, such as division of labor, task
allocation, collective regulation, mass action responses, have been
considered
as main reasons for the ecological success. In this article, we propose and
study a general modeling framework that includes the following three
features:
(a) the average internal response threshold for each task (the internal
factor); (b) social network communications that could lead to task switching
(the environmental factor); and (c) dynamical changes of task demands (the
external factor). Since workers in many social insect species exhibit
\emph{age
polyethism}, we also extend our model to incorporate \emph{age polyethism}
in
which worker task preferences change with age. We apply our general modeling
framework to the cases of two task groups: the inside colony task versus the
outside colony task. Our analytical study of the models provides important
insights and predictions on the effects of colony size, social
communication,
and age related task preferences on task allocation and division of labor in
the adaptive dynamical environment. Our study implies that the smaller size
colony invests its resource for the colony growth and allocates more
workers in
the risky tasks such as foraging while the larger colony shifts more
workers to
perform the safer tasks inside the colony. Social interactions among
different
task groups play an important role in shaping task allocation depending on
the
relative cost and demands of the tasks.

Title: Linear quantum systems with diagonal passive Hamiltonian and a single

Given any covariance matrix corresponding to a so-called pure Gaussian
state,
a linear quantum system can be designed to achieve the assigned covariance
matrix. In most cases, however, one might obtain a system that is difficult
to
realize in practice. In this paper, we restrict our attention to a special

Although symmetric informationally complete positive operator valued
measures
(SIC POVMs, or SICs for short) have been constructed in every dimension up
to
67, a general existence proof remains elusive. The purpose of this paper is
to
show that the SIC existence problem is equivalent to three other, on the
face
of it quite different problems. Although it is still not clear whether these
reformulations of the problem will make it more tractable, we believe that
the
fact that SICs have these connections to other areas of mathematics is of
some
intrinsic interest. Specifically, we reformulate the SIC problem in terms of
(1) Lie groups, (2) Lie algebras and (3) Jordan algebras (the second result
being a greatly strengthened version of one previously obtained by Appleby,
Flammia and Fuchs). The connection between these three reformulations is
non-trivial: It is not easy to demonstrate their equivalence directly,
without
appealing to their common equivalence to SIC existence. In the course of our
analysis we obtain a number of other results which may be of some
independent
interest.

Title: Relativistic Landau Models and Generation of Fuzzy Spheres

\\
Non-commutative geometry naturally emerges in low energy physics of Landau
models as a consequence of level projection. In this work, we proactively
utilize the level projection as an effective tool to generate fuzzy
geometry.
The level projection is specifically applied to the relativistic Landau
models.
In one-half of the paper, a detail analysis of the relativistic Landau
problems
on a sphere is presented, where a concise expression of the Dirac-Landau
operator eigenstates is obtained based on algebraic methods. We establish
$SU(2)$ "gauge" transformation between the relativistic Landau model and the
Pauli-Schr\"odinger non-relativistic quantum mechanics. In the other half,
the
fuzzy geometries generated from the relativistic Landau levels are
elucidated,
where unique properties of the relativistic fuzzy geometries are clarified.
We
consider mass deformation of the relativistic Landau models and demonstrate
its
geometrical effects to fuzzy geometry. Super fuzzy geometry is also
constructed
from a supersymmetric quantum mechanics as the square of the Dirac-Landau
operator. Finally, we apply the level projection method to real graphene
system
to generate valley fuzzy spheres.

The relativistic quantum dynamics of an electrically charged particle
subject
to the Klein-Gordon oscillator and the Coulomb potential is investigated. By
searching for relativistic bound states, a particular quantum effect can be
observed: a dependence of the angular frequency of the Klein-Gordon
oscillator
on the quantum numbers of the system. The meaning of this behaviour of the
angular frequency is that only some specific values of the angular
frequency of
the Klein-Gordon oscillator are permitted in order to obtain bound state
solutions. As an example, we obtain both the angular frequency and the
energy
level associated with the ground state of the relativistic system. Further,
we
analyse the behaviour of an electrically charged particle subject to the
Klein-Gordon oscillator, the Coulomb potential and a linear scalar
potential.

We present a new construction for the Hodge operator for differential
manifolds based on a Fourier (Berezin)-integral representation. We find a
simple formula for the Hodge dual of the wedge product of differential
forms,
using the (Berezin)-convolution. The present analysis is easily extended to
supergeometry and to non-commutative geometry.

Title: An Algorithmic Framework for Efficient Large-Scale Circuit Simulation
Using Exponential Integrators

\\
We propose an efficient algorithmic framework for time domain circuit
simulation using exponential integrator. This work addresses several
critical
issues exposed by previous matrix exponential based circuit simulation
research, and makes it capable of simulating stiff nonlinear circuit system
at
a large scale. In this framework, the system's nonlinearity is treated with
exponential Rosenbrock-Euler formulation. The matrix exponential and vector
product is computed using invert Krylov subspace method. Our proposed method
has several distinguished advantages over conventional formulations (e.g.,
the
well-known backward Euler with Newton-Raphson method). The matrix
factorization
is performed only for the conductance/resistance matrix G, without being
performed for the combinations of the capacitance/inductance matrix C and
matrix G, which are used in traditional implicit formulations. Furthermore,
due
to the explicit nature of our formulation, we do not need to repeat LU
decompositions when adjusting the length of time steps for error controls.
Our
algorithm is better suited to solving tightly coupled post-layout circuits
in
the pursuit for full-chip simulation. Our experimental results validate the
advantages of our framework.

In order to perform accurate electroencephalography (EEG) source
reconstruction, i.e., to localize the sources underlying a measured EEG, the
electric potential distribution at the electrodes generated by a dipolar
current source in the brain has to be simulated, the so-called EEG forward
problem. Therefore, it is necessary to apply numerical methods that are
able to
take the individual geometry and conductivity distribution of the subject's
head into account. The finite element method (FEM) has shown high numerical
accuracy with the possibility to model complex geometries and conductive
features, e.g., white matter conductivity anisotropy. In this article we
introduce and analyze the application of a Discontinuous Galerkin (DG)
method,
a finite element method that includes features of the finite volume
framework,
to the EEG forward problem. The DG-FEM approach allows to fulfill the
conservation property of electric charge also in the discrete case, making
it
attractive for a variety of applications. Furthermore, as we show, it can
alleviate modeling inaccuracies that might occur in head geometries when
using
classical FE methods, e.g., so-called "skull leakage effects" for skull
compartments with a thickness in the range of the mesh resolution.
Therefore,
we derive a DG formulation of the FEM subtraction approach for the EEG
forward
problem and present first numerical results which highlight the advantageous
features and the potential of the proposed approach.

Title: Sparse Nonlinear Regression: Parameter Estimation and Asymptotic

We study parameter estimation and asymptotic inference for sparse
nonlinear
regression. More specifically, we assume the data are given by $y = f(
x^\top
\beta^* ) + \epsilon$, where $f$ is nonlinear. To recover $\beta^*$, we
propose
an $\ell_1$-regularized least-squares estimator. Unlike classical linear
regression, the corresponding optimization problem is nonconvex because of
the
nonlinearity of $f$. In spite of the nonconvexity, we prove that under mild
conditions, every stationary point of the objective enjoys an optimal
statistical rate of convergence. In addition, we provide an efficient
algorithm
that provably converges to a stationary point. We also access the
uncertainty
of the obtained estimator. Specifically, based on any stationary point of
the
objective, we construct valid hypothesis tests and confidence intervals for
the
low dimensional components of the high-dimensional parameter $\beta^*$.
Detailed numerical results are provided to back up our theory.

Title: A New Realization Method for Linear Quantum Stochastic Systems
Authors: Symeon Grivopoulos, Ian Petersen
Categories: quant-ph math.OC
Comments: Submitted to the SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization
\\
The issue of realization of the transfer functions of Linear Quantum
Stochastic Systems (LQSSs) is of fundamental importance for the practical
applications of such systems, especially as coherent controllers of other
quantum systems. So far, most works that addressed this problem have used
cascade realizations. In this work, a new method is proposed, where the
transfer function of a LQSS is realized by a series of a pre-processing
linear
static network, a reduced LQSS, and a post-processing linear static network.
The introduction of the pre- and post-processing static networks leaves an
intermediate reduced LQSS with a simple input/output structure, that is
realized by a concatenation of simple cavities. A feedback connection of the
cavities through a linear static network is used to produce the correct
dynamics for the reduced system. The resulting realization has a nice
modular
design, and provides a structural picture of the system, as well. The
mathematical tool that allows for the construction of this realization, is
an
SVD-like decomposition for doubled-up matrices in Krein spaces. Illustrative
examples are provided for the theory developed.

We consider the problem of recovering a complete (i.e., square and
invertible) matrix $\mathbf A_0$, from $\mathbf Y \in \mathbb{R}^{n \times
p}$
with $\mathbf Y = \mathbf A_0 \mathbf X_0$, provided $\mathbf X_0$ is
sufficiently sparse. This recovery problem is central to the theoretical
understanding of dictionary learning, which seeks a sparse representation
for a
collection of input signals, and finds numerous applications in modern
signal
processing and machine learning. We give the first efficient algorithm that
provably recovers $\mathbf A_0$ when $\mathbf X_0$ has $O(n)$ nonzeros per
column, under suitable probability model for $\mathbf X_0$.
Our algorithmic pipeline centers around solving a certain nonconvex
optimization problem with a spherical constraint, and hence is naturally
phrased in the language of manifold optimization. In the first paper
(arXiv:1511.03607), we have showed that with high probability our nonconvex
formulation has no "spurious" local minimizers and any saddle point present
is
second-order. In this paper, we take advantage of the particular geometric
structure and design a Riemannian trust region algorithm over the sphere
that
provably converges to a local minimizer with an arbitrary initialization.
Such
minimizers give excellent approximations to rows of $\mathbf X_0$. The rows
are
recovered by linear programming rounding and deflation.

Title: Scenario generation for portfolio selection problems with tail risk
measure
Authors: Jamie Fairbrother, Amanda Turner, Stein Wallace
Categories: q-fin.RM math.OC
\\
Tail risk measures such as the conditional value-at-risk are useful in the
context of portfolio selection for quantifying potential losses in worst
cases.
However, for scenario-based problems these are problematic: because the
value
of a tail risk measure only depends on a small subset of the support of the
distribution of asset returns, traditional scenario based methods, which
spread
scenarios evenly across the whole support of the distribution, yield very
unstable solutions unless we use a very large number scenarios. In this
paper
we propose a problem-driven scenario generation methodology for portfolio
selection problems using a tail risk measure where the the asset returns
have
elliptical or near-elliptical distribution. Our approach in effect
prioritizes
the construction of scenarios in the areas of the distribution which
correspond
to the tail losses of feasible portfolios. The methodology is shown to work
particularly well when the distribution of assets returns are positively
correlated and heavy-tailed, and the performance is shown to improve as we
tighten the constraints on feasible assets.
