Webinar: Math Education Is STEM Education
Global Math Department Webinars | #MathPhoto17

What design principles would you include to ensure that an
effective STEM (science, technology, engineering, and
mathematics) program builds mathematics understanding?

NCTM President Matt Larson asked this question earlier this
summer, garnering many responses on a blog post. In a couple of
Mondays, he will address it in greater depth during a webinar.

The free online event takes place Monday, July 17.

The Global Math Department (GMD) recently rounded up all 42 of
the webinars it ran this past academic year, including--

- 3 Reasons Kids Don't Know Facts and How to Help;
- 6 Hand Signals that Bring Learning to Life;
- (Almost) No Rote Required;
- Back to School Night Ideas;
- Cultivating Mathematical Reasoning;
- Flipping Your Math Classroom: More Than Just Videos
and Worksheets;
- #LessonClose;
- Making Student Thinking Visible Using Tech Tools;
- Making the Most of Mistakes;
- Our Path to Personalization with Standards-Based
Feedback; and
- TMC 16 - My Favorites.

GMD first appeared in these pages three summers ago, when it
launched a weekly newsletter of its own. Acquainted via the
MathTwitterBlogosphere (MTBoS) and Twitter Math Camp, the group
of math teachers is now looking for volunteers to host, book,
or write professional development for the 2017-18 school year:

Calling all shutterbugs: the math photo challenge has returned!

#MathPhoto17 is encouraging the MTBoS to once again focus its
lenses on interesting examples of math concepts. Upcoming
weekly themes include--

- arrays;
- lines;
- units;
- inequality;
- scale; and
- symmetry.

This photographic fun first appeared in these pages two summers
ago, when it began. For pictures from past years, scroll down
these Flickr photostreams from 2015 and 2016; respectively:
