Ignite Talks | First Day of School | #MTBoSfd

This week, we finished back-filling our video series of five
minute-long talks by math education leaders at conferences of
NCTM, NCSM, and the California Mathematics Council (CMC). Tune
in to re-live the memories and find new inspirations, now all
conveniently organized into playlists on our YouTube channel.

Since 2010, the Math Forum has convened colleagues to "talk
about whatever lights them up." As each person spoke, their 20
PowerPoint slides auto-advanced every 15 seconds ... ready or
not! These "Ignite" talks -- often funny, sometimes poignant,
and definitely breathless -- quickly became requisite
conference experiences.

For the newly completed collection of all our fast, fired-up
fun, visit

What do you do on the first day of school?

Check out these "openers," techniques, literature connections,
and other suggestions from the Math Forum's
Teacher2Teacher (T2T) service.

Several blogging math teachers have posted lesson plans and
other ideas for how to kick off the school year. Julie
Reulbach, whose own "I Speak Math" blog recently surpassed two
million hits, has rounded up nearly 50 of these timely posts:

Reulbach last appeared in these pages upon the launch of the
MathTwitterBlogosphere site, which she helped organize. A
middle school math teacher in North Carolina, she gathered
these tips for first days and first weeks by tweeting a hashtag
that continues bubbling with inspiration.
