Sometimes you will find it written the following way:

x^2/a^2 + y^2/b^2 = 1 .

"The shape parameters a, b are called the semi major axis and semi minor axis."

Hint: "It follows from the equation that the ellipse is symmetric with respect to both of the coordinate axes and hence symmetric with respect to the origin."
