After a number of frustrations with my 17.10 upgrade I decided to to a
clean install. What a difference! My icons are now clickable and I feel
I am not dragging along a lot of old stuff. That said, I have a few
observations and questions.

1) I am surprised by stuff that isn't in a clean install. For example,
the GCC compiler.

2) Grub is installed in its own partition called grub2 core.img. Is there
a reason for this?

3) At login, as well as the usual user name, there is something called
"not listed". If you click on it you get asked for a password which I
don't know.

4) There are certain applications which run in terminal mode (e.g.
Python,GP,Sage). How can I make these "Favorites."

Best Regards,
