This is a group answer from Jodi Fleishman, Marcia Radbill and Ursala Rice.

>What are similar problems that you have used in your classroom?

I've used pattern problems, specifically the Rule of 360, in teaching
solving LogoWriter circle equation programming sequence problems in math a
few years ago.Ie, fill in the blank in the equation to complete the
sequence.

>How would you change this problem if you were going to use it?

It could be used to determine which student may sit next to the teacher in
my computer lab or in the luch room. (Which seat would they be sitting in
to be next to the teacher?) Our group figured it out that you could use
rows or lines, and by connecting the first and last seats on the rows, the
solution still works.

This works very well with supporting the math curriculum (problem solving'
etc.), as well as in on-going activities of co-operative learning
activities-something our inner city students need to practice on a daily
basis.
