This is to announce an invitational conference for mentor or lead teachers of geometry. Participants will be introduced to new resources in the field and will help to develop a computerized network linking geometers and classrooms around the world. The conference will be held June 28-July 3, 1993, at Swarthmore College, Swarthmore, PA.
The conference is being hosted by The Geometry Forum, an electronic community for geometers which enables teachers (and students) to exchange ideas and resources and to access geometers and expert teachers internationally.
The targeted goal for the week is to become familiar with the great number of resources available through this network and to design pilot materials and programs that would enhance its usefulness and accessibility to classroom teachers.
Topics will include:
o Sharing and developing TEACHING STRATEGIES for rich, discovery oriented classroom experiences that take advantage of the online approach and implement NCTM standards. o WRITING in--and between--geometry classrooms; o Creating a RESOURCE AREA for geometry teachers to exchange lessons, curricula, and exciting new computer programs and files; o Linking teachers and classes to GEOMETRY EXPERTS from around the world, o Conducting special geometry NETWORK PROJECTS, such as calculating the circumference of the earth;
Travel, room, and board will be provided for all participants. Participating teachers will receive some equipment, geometry software, and support as needed for linking school computers to the network. As a result, they will have continued access to the resources encountered and be able to continue with interactions begun during the workshop.
The Geometry Forum is funded by the National Science Foundation.
Individuals interested in further information about applying for conference participation should immediately contact Annie Fetter at 800-756-7823 or firstname.lastname@example.org. The size of the conference will be limited.
