Problem of the Week, December 6

[Sorry for the lack of a problem for some time! I am still looking for good
elementary-type problems if anyone has anything to submit. -Annie]
The problem of the week is a regular installment here at the geometry forum.
Each
weekend a high-school level geometry problem will be posted (though levels may
be
different in the summer), and the following weekend a summary of solutions and
their
authors will be posted.
Once a month a harder, project-like problem will be posted as well, and
students will
have a month to get together a solution. The first of these will be posted at
the
end of December
Please do not post solutions to the problem of the week; instead mail you
answer along
with as detailed a description of your method as necessary/possible to
pow@forum.swarthmore.edu. Solutions should be received by midnight Friday so
they can
be combined and posted over the weekend.

Problem of the Week for December 6-10:
A circle is inscribed in a semicircle. The diameter of the circle and the
radius of the semicircle are 12 units. What is the area of the region of
the semicircle that is outside the circle?
