When I took a History of Mathematics course with the Open University, my
(relatively) young tutor described a situation where he was having to
comment on a presentation which he knew to be by his professor. He was
glad that his reply was anonymous, since other referees also agreed that
the article was not acceptable. This may be an exception to the rule as it
were, but emphasises one reason for anonymity.
