Hi, I just received latest version of the Geometer's Sketchpad 4.0 and noticed that in its 101 Project Ideas booklet idea #18 refer's to a famous (and favorite) problem that goes like this: Imagine a "belt" wrapped snugly around the earth. Now cut the belt and add 10 feet to its length. Stretch it back to a slightly bigger circle and position so that it's a uniform distance above the earth's surface. How large is the gap between the earth and the belt?
Has anyone done this problem with students or would like to try? Would you be willing to share a lesson plan? Let me know.
You will find more about this problem and other interesting things related to math and technology at
