Opinions, please, on solving trig equations.

Example, Solve sin 4x = -sqrt(3)/2 in [0, 2pi]

I teach this traditionally, but if a student asked me why she can't just
solve this using her graphics calculator, I would have to mumble things
about patterns, elegance, understanding, etc.

How would you answer such a question?
