Hi Everyone:

I teach math at a local community college.

Question: In the old style math symbols (non-computer style)

(3+5)5 evaluates to 40

does (3+5)-5 mean (8)(-5) = -40 or (8)-5 = 3?

and

Are any schools teaching the computer-style-math symbols, because in this
case there is no problem.

(3+5)*-5 is clearly -40
