Basic Library List

In response to a request from Della Fenster at Richmond, I would like to try to prepare a version of a basic library list in the history of mathematics (unless this has already been done, in which case please let me know.)

This should be an annotated bibliography grouping works by subject which ranks them, perhaps in the manner of the Telegraphic Reviews in the Monthly. My idea is to solicit that suggestions be sent in a format which can be transcribed directly to a database so that the whole effort won't take too long.

Please don't send anything yet. However, in preparation for this I have two requests.

1. I need several volunteers to co-edit successive versions of the list, serving as consultants about format, contents, etc. (If anyone would prefer to manage the database, please don't be shy to volunteer!)

2. Please start getting your personal list ready, at least mentally. Particularly of interest are items that you may have run into that you suspect may not be widely known - though of course we don't want to miss anything obvious either.

The literature in the field has grown very substantially in the past 25 years, and a guide which is less comprehensive than Dauben's bibliography would it seems to me be of genuine use to those attenpting to get history courses started at institutions with limited resources.

I hope to write about this again within a week. ********************************************************** Tom Archibald
