Based on the intense negative response to the three extant Standards
volumes and other reform initiatives including a variety of 'reform'
curricula, it is likely that the Standards-2000 volume will receive
vastly more public and media attention than did its predecessors. In
light of the harsh critical scrutiny it will face, this volume needs
to be written in the clearest possible language. The authors must
consider both professional, lay, media and political audiences. They
must anticipate the rhetorical implications of EVERY word and how
language might be misunderstood. Buzz words like "equity,"
"empowerment," "conceptual understanding," and the like must be
CLEARLY explicated. Illustrative examples must be chosen with the
utmost care and for maximum clarity. Finally, links to the bes
possible research, pro and con, must be made explicit for skeptical
readers. If we don't 'field test' these standards in a broader arena
than the professional communities we use routinely, we're going to see
less than satisfactory results. We shouldn't need to make weak
compromises later because of our failures now.
