My geometry class did a short and simple unit on the basic trig
functions. Then the students made transits using protractors, string, PVC pipe
and plumb-bobs. The students were then asked to determine the length of boom
needed on a bucket truck to trim the pine trees growing over the electrical
transformers for the school. They had to determine the height of the trees
using trig., determine the best place to park the truck, and finally the
diagonal from the bed of the truck to the tree tops.
