THis is a reply to the letter regarding the correlation between standardized test results.
So now we can address assessment . RI is working on a state wide program with a three prong approach- Standardized testing, performance based, and portfolios. The assessment standards are due out from NCTM this spring. Any comments from teachers who have tried the open ended problems, portfolios, etc. Incorporating all of this, including the writing, means MORE time - I am sure we are all facing the same time constraints. Add to that the emphasis on problem solving, keeping the computation ability up, using calculators (I have to teach HOW to use a standard calculator corrretly to approximately 90% of my 7th graders), etc. But it is all very exciting - this from a person who used Saxon for 5 years and only two years ago transitiohed into Silver Burdett. Can't say I ever used just THE text. Local school committtees still are emphasizing those test scores - that's how they currently measure students' progress and our "teaching" success.
