-2 = (-8) = (-8) = [(-8) ] = 2

[in case the format gets messed up, what I typed above is the same as:

-2 = (-8)^(1/3) = (-8)^(2/6) = [(-8)^2]^(1/6) = 2 ]

There are a couple of articles in the September issue of Educational
Studies in Mathematics about this equation.
