The following paragraph by Tad coincides with my own observation on various issues concerning
Educational practice in US. If one thinks hard enough, one would see a good analogy to "calculator usage in math classroom", "self-discipline", "creativity", "emphasis on understanding", "collaboration"...
For example, I was amazed how much more emphasis on "being creative" in US school, but I do not see more creativity coming out of this school system.
Yes, the thought is wonderful, but the implementation is ..........

One other thing. I was reading a book that discussed how teachers learn
to teach in the US and in Japan. One thing the authors discussed is what
are valued in these two cultures. In Japan, cooperation (some may say
comformity) is valued while in the US, independence is valued. US
teachers often talk about helping kids become independent
thinkers/learners. What's funny (to me) is that the way some US teachers
(perhaps this is more of the function of the schooling as a system) teach
kids to become independent. When 5-year old enters their elementary
schools, they are taught to line up straight, follow the leader, always
raise their hands before they can say anything in classroom, etc. Also
interesting is the fact that Japanse schools appear to give children more
free time in which *they* can decide how they want to spend that time -
for example, there is usually a 20-minutes break between periods when kids
can play on their own. On the surface, there is a mismatch of what's
valued and how it is being taught.
