Lenny VerMaas wrote about calculator use in the elementary school. I can
verify that we do use calculators in 5th grade but with some controls.
Calculators are used - as a matter of fact I supply T.I. Explorers whenever
we are working on problem solving where the method is more important than
the actual computation.
I also use calculators in teaching mult. and div. Once kids have learned
the process the multiplication or division - then I think it's also
important to show them that a division problem with a 4 digit divisor and
an 8 digit dividend is more efficiently done with a calculator. How can we
be sure that kids aren't using calculators on their homework? Easy -
require them to "show their work" OR don't make them take the work home.
