Nancy and others: try teaching multiplication and division of fractions
before addition and subtraction with unlike denominators. You can use the
rectangular array model (start with a large 1 x 1 and mark fractional parts
on the sides of it, draw lines across and kids easily see the answer).
Then with confidence in fractional number sense and multiplication and
division strong, students have less anxiety about tackling the tougher
addition and subtracting with lcd's and renaming.
