Dear list members,

It truly pains me to send this message, since I hate to contribute in any
way to the unfortunately large occurrence of messages that are irrelavent
to the subject matter of this lists. However, I'm hoping that the
appearance of this note will help clean things up a bit.

A recent posting by a list member (incorrectly) telling the other members
how to unsubscribe made me realize that I should have jumped into this
conversation earlier.

It's come to my (and all of our) attention that many of us do not know how
to unsubscribe. We certainly do not expect everybody to be experts on the
Internet, but we hope that people have the respect and wherewithal to
follow directions for the sake of the community.

When you first subscribed, you received a welcome message that urged you to
KEEP IT! This is a perfect example of why. It is a genuine nuisance to be
subscribed to a list that receives so many mistakenly posted messages.
What's more, even if you know to deal with majordomo, you may not know
exacly how. Majordomo is a VERY particular piece of software.

The best and safest way to unsubscribe from one of our lists is to go into
your welcome message and copy the command that is given to you there. This
will ensure that you use the proper configuration of your name and email
address. (It is not correct to tell every subscriber to use his/her name
and email address, as it depends on how majordomo first recorded your
identity. It only cares about the email address.)

If you don't have your welcome message, try the following:

Send mail to:

with the following command in the BODY of your email message:

unsubscribe nctm-l

(NOTE: that's an L in nctm-l)
This will work as long as the address you're mailing from is the same as
that from which you originally subscribed.

If you know that you're using a different account (or an address that in
ANY way differs) from the one under which you're subscribed, you can do the

Send mail to:

with the following command in the BODY of your email message:

unsubscribe nctm-l <original subscribed address>

If you do this, your request will be sent to the list owner for approval.

Finally, if you don't know what address you're subscribed under, or if
you've tried one of the above and received a message that said
"such-and-such is not a member of the list so-and-so", you can see a list
of subscribers and copy your information from there. Send a message to
which says:
who nctm-l

Thanks for your patience, and again, my sincere apologies to those of you
for whom this was redundant information.
