thank you for a very well stated opinion. I agree with you wholeheartedly - the Standards may or may not be ( I think it is) the best thing to happen in mathematics ed in decades, but the successful implementation of its goals lies in the skills and dedication of the teachers (provided they have the support of their administration - it's very hard to go it alone).
p.s. - I have been including more and more standards into my lessons each year for the past 5 years, and my teaching and my students' learning has never been better. In MS, we are required to give an exit test at the end of Algebra I - all students must take the test. This year, I taught my 8th graders almost exclusively through projects and activities and performance, tested with a combination of traditional tests and performance activities or reports, and my students' test scored increased by over 9 points! The way this test is scored, that increase translates to each student getting on average 5 more problems correct (out of 75) than did last years' students. This also means that, since last year's students' overall average was 80%, this year's average is 87%. I'll take that type of increase any day.
