There is a level on which it _is_ important to know how the dishwasher works. You will get your dishes cleaner if, for example, you don't stack glasses inside each other, or put a cookie sheet over all of the spray jets. True, you could memorize a long list of acceptable cleaning configurations, but you will be able to use the dishwasher effectively and with less effort if you have an idea of where the spray jets are so that you can use common sense to decide an effective way of loading it.
