I couldn't agree with you more!! I guess the point that I am trying to make is: if the TI92 can factor any quadratic polynomial almost instantaneously, do we continue to spend 12 weeks having our students use paper and pencil to factor.....or do we cut it to 12 days with the remainder spent in applying new tech to solve more sophisticated problems? Recently, the San Jose Math Leadership group spent a day using the TI92 and someone facetiously remarked: "Now we'll be able to finish Algebra 2 in a couple of weeks". In fact, a student who was facile with this impressive new calculator could solve almost any problem in our current (but outdated Calif. text) in a matter of seconds.
