I couldn't agree with you more!! I guess the point that I am trying to
make is: if the TI-92 can factor any quadratic polynomial almost
instantaneously, do we continue to spend 1-2 weeks having our students
use paper and pencil to factor.....or do we cut it to 1-2 days with the
remainder spent in applying new tech to solve more sophisticated
problems? Recently, the San Jose Math Leadership group spent a day using
the TI-92 and someone facetiously remarked: "Now we'll be able to finish
Algebra 2 in a couple of weeks". In fact, a student who was facile with
this impressive new calculator could solve almost any problem in our
current (but outdated Calif. text) in a matter of seconds.
