Chih-Han sah quoted "If the past has nothing to say about the present, then
the present has nothing to say about the future." He wondered if anyone knew
who the writer was. I do. He is Frank Allen, president of the NCTM in the
50's, I believe. He was president while head of the math department at
Lyons Township H. S. in LaGrange, IL, and, after retiring from high
school, was on the faculty and later head of the math department of Elmhurst
College. Frank is now 85 and still keeps up with with the NCTM and other math
related activities. I occasionally print out some of the postings from this
list because he is not happy with some of the direction of the "Standards"
and wondered how this list is reacting to them. He will in due time post his
own observations to this list. He will be very pleased to know he was quoted.
