In response to the not-at-all-irrelevant story from Ted Alper <alper@Ockham.Stanford.EDU>, I think that the problem might have less to do with the use of calculators and more to do with the lack of experience playing with patterns and relationships in mathematics starting in the early years in school. If we get around to implementing the Standards, so that "pre-algebra" isn't a one-year course for grade 7 or 8 but an integral part of mathematics K-8, perhaps the students will think first of patterns and have a vast experience to draw on.
